Sandy Hutchens: Whistleblower Jumpstarts Pathology Probe
A Winnipeg pathologist whistleblower is concerned about diagnostic practices he says are jeopardizing Manitobans.
Doctor David Grynspan says the doctors who analyze tissue samples for cancer and other diseases are being overworked because of seven vacancies. He says one doctor put in a 160-hour work week. Grynspan says the situation led to at least one serious misdiagnosis.
He also claims some pathologists are over billing the system by as much as $20 thousand.
Grynspan says he was bullied and told to keep quiet about his allegations.
Instead he sent an 18-page complaint last month to the Diagnostic Services of Manitoba Board.
The Board began an internal review after it received the report.
The Province says that probe has rejected Grynspan’s accusation that patient safety was put at risk.
“It was shown at that time the facts did not match the allegations and indeed no patient harm was done.” said Health Minister Theresa Oswald.
An external review is also being done by a former health authority executive.
The Health Minister says the reviews’ findings will be made public.
